Fresno has been actively implementing initiatives to address climate change and promote sustainability. These efforts encompass renewable energy projects, environmental justice programs, and comprehensive climate action plans.
Renewable Energy Projects
The City of Fresno has developed a substantial solar and battery storage portfolio, recognized as the largest commercial installation in the U.S. This initiative is projected to save the city $120 million by 2045 and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 26,000 tons annually, equivalent to removing over 6,000 gas-powered vehicles from the roads each year. The project has also created over 120 local jobs, contributing to the local economy.
Environmental Justice Initiatives
In 2013-2014, the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Justice Task Force selected a portion of Fresno and its surrounding unincorporated area for its first initiative, aiming to increase compliance with environmental laws in the area. This initiative focused on addressing environmental challenges faced by disadvantaged communities, promoting equitable access to clean air, water, and land.
Climate Action Plans
The Fresno Council of Governments (COG) is administering a $1 million Climate Pollution Reduction Grant awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This grant supports the development of comprehensive climate action plans, including greenhouse gas emissions inventories and strategies to reduce emissions across various sectors such as transportation, industry, and agriculture. The final Comprehensive Climate Action Plan Analysis was accepted by the Fresno COG Policy Board on February 26, 2026.
Community Engagement
Community involvement is integral to Fresno’s climate initiatives. Events like Earth Day Fresno provide platforms for residents to engage with sustainability efforts, learn about energy efficiency, water conservation, and eco-friendly practices. These events foster a sense of community and collective responsibility towards environmental stewardship.
Fresno’s multifaceted approach to combating climate change reflects a commitment to sustainability and environmental justice. Through renewable energy projects, targeted initiatives for disadvantaged communities, and comprehensive planning, the city is making significant strides toward a more sustainable future.
